Post modern mission

This is a kind of reworking of an earlier post *batteries not included buy exploring how we can use post modern conditions (PMC) to aid the process of mission or if you like how can the charateristics of post modernity help us help the world and ourselves become fully human. They all inter relate but here are a few I have been thinking on.

PMC Truth is relative
– reinforces the need for missional humility countering the Christendom arrogance.
– reinforces that it is God’s mission not ours
PMC This is my truth
– mission is a dialogue and christianity is a faith that questions our answers so we can journey together
-we do not have a monopoly on truth but see through a glass dimly they may help liberate us
– if we listen thier truth they will listen to ours
– trust our story
PMC it is all one
– mission is worship which fuels our faith and gives time to engage with people
– is a response that goes beyond the categories of modernity so can itself be critiqued
– you will find God in that moment
PMC Individualist consumerism
– even here God is present, there is the echo of a memory that this may not fullfill
– the fleeting nature of the purchase and the God who plays hide and seek
PMC it is all relative
– opens dialogue and listening which in turns offers and reinforces the desire for relationships
– a good place to start a journey of discovery
PMC hyper criticism
– if a seeker seeks they will find, encourge the questions rather close down the dialogue by giving an answer
– the offer and possible discovery of the herectical imperative
– christ is beyond the propositional approachs and faith is not about assent to the particularBaja Beach Bums move

In the madness that was yesterday I ended up with missing two meals, which actually served me well as I often fail to prepare as approach Lent. It reminded me of the approaching time and the need for discipline in fasting, appropriatly and purposefully. So this is my gentle reminder to myself as i approach the season to SORT IT OUT!!

One of the yp I work with is an excellent skater and usually cleans up when he enters any competitions locally. We were discussing part time jobs and about the possiblity of setting up a skateschool as a social enterprise where we come and teach basic skating to other youth projects. just chatting to Jonny about the church on the edge project and our approach of being church together with young people who are not “believers” and he used the language of being church on the way, which I thought a great way of describing it.

For my post grad I am looking at how we have separated church and mission, but reading through much of the missional church stuff I still think there remains a problem because the old definition of church that centres on church as the body of believers still remains as a part of the missional church definition (would you say this is true or do I have the wrong end of the stick) which in reality counteracts and limits the mission dei understanding at the heart of missional church as we know it.

Missional church if it is to be true to the sentiments of missio dei is more about people of faith and of no faith being on a journey of discovery (towards fullness of life for themselves, their community and the world) together and WITH an equality in this process that enables mission (the sort that Donovan describes in Christianity rediscovered) and mission dei to truly be the core of church. This means us becoming more powerless about our ideas of what church and if we are not we cannot be missional church. The example I would use is Flow church where the young people I work with call God Flow, and have agreed to come on the journey of being church, which in itself means discovering what Flow and church is, even though they are not believers in the way most people would understand believers to be.
